Painful Periods – 7 Tips For PMS

Painful Periods?

Cramps, bloating, or severe discomfort when your period rolls around each month?

There can be many different reasons for painful periods and PMS…

  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Endometriosis
  • Fibroids
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease

If one of these underlying conditions is present, it should be treated by a healthcare professional.

However, many women experience painful periods and PMS for no obvious cause.

New research out of Taiwan reports that one risk factor for painful periods may be long-term exposure to air pollution. This new study, published in Frontiers of Public Health, found that the risk of developing problematic periods over a period of 13 years was 33 times higher in Taiwanese girls and women who lived in areas with the worst air pollution.

This is not actually surprising. The liver is your main organ for detoxification, including hormones. In order to metabolize hormones through the body to be eliminated, your liver and colon must be functioning properly.

Air pollutants need to be processed and eliminated from the body just like any other toxicant. Pollutants put a strain on our everyday detoxification mechanisms.

This study is an important reminder that nothing in our body acts in a vacuum. Our hormonal health is closely related to our detoxification and digestive systems and can be disrupted by exposure to environmental pollutants.

This is why optimizing your daily detoxification systems and occasional cleanses make a big difference—even for seemingly unrelated issues like painful periods.

How can you begin to optimize your detox systems starting now?

  • Clean up your diet – consume whole and colorful foods that come from the earth, avoiding processed and high sugar foods
  • Consume omega 3 fatty acids to reduce inflammation and pain, such as fish, nuts, seeds, avocado, olive oil, etc.
  • Emphasize cruciferous vegetable consumption to support the liver, such as cabbage, cauliflower, kale, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, etc.
  • Clean up your body and home products – get rid of products that contain harmful chemicals, when put on your skin or inhaled they immediately get absorbed into your body, which stimulates the body to work harder to detoxify these toxins
  • Infrared Sauna – to stimulate detoxification pathways
  • Dry brushing – to stimulate and move lymph allowing for improved detoxification
